Recreated Braided Platinum Wedding Band
$$$
Platinum
W. lost his platinum wedding band and came to us to recreate it from memory alone — no photos, no paperwork, just a clear picture of the braided pattern that wrapped around the band. He was direct about one thing: he wanted the replacement heavier than the original. When it arrived, he wrote: 'I absolutely love it! You did an incredible job! Very very happy, can't thank you enough.'

Size
Ring size 10 US (19.76mm). Band width 8mm. Finished weight approximately 20 grams.
How they made it distinctive
-
01
Continuous woven braid pattern wraps the full circumference of the band, with no smooth resting section on the outer surface
-
02
Cast in solid platinum rather than a lighter alternative, specifically to achieve a heavier, more substantial feel on the hand
-
03
Smooth, unpolished interior surface recreated to match the original ring's construction exactly
-
04
Rebuilt entirely from the client's memory and verbal description, with no reference photo or physical original to work from
-
05
Finished weight of approximately 20 grams, notably heavier than a standard band of the same width
How you'd make it yours
Metal: this piece uses solid platinum; a new commission could use 18k white gold for a similar bright finish at a lower weight
Pattern: this piece uses a continuous woven braid; a new design could use a tighter or looser weave, or a different repeating texture
Width: this piece is 8mm; a new commission could be made narrower or wider depending on preference
Finish: this piece is high polish throughout; a new piece could use a brushed or matte finish on the raised pattern for contrast
One of a kind: this exact ring was designed to replace one client's lost band and is not reproduced — a new commission is an original piece inspired by this one, not a copy
Design changes made
Design matched the initial brief without major changes.
Who this is for
This piece is for someone who wants their replacement ring to feel more substantial than the one it replaces, not just a copy. It's especially right if you have a clear picture in your head of a textured or patterned band and want it built in solid platinum rather than a lighter metal.
How it's made
Once the design was approved, a resin model was 3D printed from the CAD file — the first physical version of the ring, photographed and shared with the client before any metal was committed. The resin was attached to a wax tree and invested in plaster, which was fired in a kiln to burn out the pattern and leave a hollow mold. Molten platinum was then cast into the mold under pressure, producing the raw solid-platinum band.
After casting, the band was cut free from the tree, cleaned of investment residue, and hand-finished to bring out the braid pattern's dimensional detail. The piece was then polished to a high-gloss finish across the entire woven surface, with care taken to keep the interior band smooth and unpolished texture out of the design, consistent with the original ring's construction. No stones were set, so the finishing work was entirely about surface and form.
Key note
Because the design called for a continuous woven pattern with no smooth resting band, the entire ring had to be cast as one solid platinum piece and hand-polished across every facet of the braid rather than just a flat outer surface.
Pricing guidance
A solid platinum wedding band with a hand-finished woven pattern sits toward the higher end for custom bands, largely because of the metal itself — platinum is denser and more expensive by weight than gold, and this piece was intentionally made heavier than standard. The woven texture also adds labor cost beyond a plain polished band, since each facet of the pattern needs to be finished by hand.
Moves price up ↑
- ↑ Increasing the band weight or width further, since platinum is priced by weight
- ↑ Choosing a more intricate or multi-row braid pattern requiring additional hand-finishing time
- ↑ Adding stones set into the woven pattern
- ↑ Upgrading to a two-tone platinum and gold combination
- ↑ Wider band profile beyond 8mm
Moves price down ↓
- ↓ Switching from platinum to 14k or 18k white gold for a similar look at lower material cost
- ↓ Reducing the band width from 8mm to a slimmer profile
- ↓ Choosing a simpler single-row braid or texture pattern
- ↓ Making the piece hollow rather than solid to reduce metal weight
- ↓ Opting for a matte finish instead of high polish to reduce finishing labor
Questions people ask
Yes, rings are recreated regularly from a client's memory and description alone, without needing the original piece or even a photo. The process starts with a detailed conversation about the design, followed by a sketch and a 3D render for approval before anything is cast. Clients confirm details like the texture of the band, how far patterns extend around the ring, and whether surfaces are polished or textured. Most recreations are approved with no or minimal changes once the client sees the render.
Platinum is denser than gold, meaning a ring of the same dimensions weighs significantly more and uses more raw metal by weight. It is also a rarer and more difficult metal to work with during casting and finishing. For a solid, heavier-weight band like this one, the platinum content itself is the primary cost driver rather than labor. White gold achieves a similar bright white look at a lower cost if weight and material composition are not priorities.
Weight depends heavily on band width, thickness, and design, but a solid platinum band around 8mm wide with a textured pattern can weigh approximately 20 grams, noticeably heavier than a comparable gold band of the same dimensions. Clients who want a substantial, heavy feel on the hand often choose platinum specifically for this reason. A thinner or hollow-constructed band would weigh less. Weight is typically confirmed after the 3D model is complete, since the design, width, and pattern density all factor into the final figure.
A solid platinum band with a continuous woven pattern sits toward the higher end of custom band pricing, driven primarily by the cost of platinum by weight and the hand-finishing time required to bring out a dimensional braid pattern across the entire band. Simpler polished bands in platinum cost less, and switching to gold reduces the price further. The exact cost depends on final weight, width, and how intricate the pattern is.
The full process from design approval to delivery typically runs four to five weeks. The first week covers the sketch and 3D render, which the client reviews and approves before any metal is cast. Once approved, the ring moves into production, where a resin model is printed, invested, cast in platinum, and hand-finished, which takes approximately four weeks. The finished piece is shipped once final payment is confirmed.
A fully textured band with a continuous pattern around the entire circumference is more difficult to resize than a plain band, because stretching or compressing the metal can distort the woven pattern. Minor adjustments within a half size are usually possible without visible distortion. Larger resizing may require cutting and re-forming a section of the band, which can disrupt the pattern continuity and require additional hand-finishing to blend the repair.
Platinum is one of the most durable metals used in fine jewelry and is a strong choice for daily wear. It does not lose material the way gold does when scratched; instead it develops a soft patina over time that many wearers prefer, and it can be repolished to restore shine. It is also naturally hypoallergenic, which makes it a good option for anyone with metal sensitivities. The tradeoff is weight and cost relative to gold of a similar design.
