Swirl Band Recreation — Curled Ends in 14k Gold

$
14k yellow gold

A client wanted a ring recreated as closely as possible to one she already had — a simple design with two curled ends meeting in the middle, shown to us through her own sketch and photos. After the first render came back, she asked for the spirals to be aligned more vertically and the inside of the band rounded rather than flat, referencing a bangle to show what she meant. When it arrived, she wrote: 'It is everything I could have dreamed of. I am 1,00,000,000% satisfied!'
'This is perfect! Literally perfect!' — on seeing the revised render

How they made it distinctive
  • 01
Double-spiral design recreated to closely match an existing ring the client already owned, using only her own photos and sketch as reference
  • 02
Inner band profile changed from flat to fully rounded after client feedback, improving everyday comfort
  • 03
Spiral terminals realigned to a more vertical orientation at the client's request after the first render
  • 04
No stones or engraving — the entire design rests on clean, symmetrical wirework
  • 05
Lightweight construction intentionally kept close to the original ring's feel
How you'd make it yours
Metal: this piece is 14k yellow gold; the same spiral design works in 18k yellow gold, rose gold, or white gold
Wire gauge: this piece uses a lightweight wire; a new commission could use a heavier gauge for a more substantial feel
Band profile: this piece has a fully rounded inner band; a new piece could use a flat inner profile instead
Engraving: a short inscription could be added to the inside of a new commission's band
One of a kind: this exact ring was designed to match one client's original piece and is not reproduced — a new commission is an original piece inspired by this one, not a copy
Design changes made
After reviewing the first render, the client requested the swirls be aligned more vertically and the inside of the band changed from a flat to a fully rounded profile, referencing a bangle bracelet as a visual example. Both changes were made and approved on the second render.
Who this is for
This piece is for someone who already has a clear picture of a simple design in their head — maybe even a ring they've loved and lost a step of wear on — and wants it recreated faithfully rather than reinvented. It's especially right for anyone who prefers one confident design gesture over layered detail, and who wants to be closely involved in refining small details like comfort and proportion before anything is made.
How it's made
Once the design was approved, the 3D model was printed in wax and attached to a wax tree inside a flask. The flask was placed in a kiln to burn out the wax, leaving a hollow mold in its place. Molten 14k yellow gold was then cast into that mold, producing the raw ring before it was removed, cleaned, and prepared for finishing. Because the design is a simple double-spiral band with no stones, finishing centered entirely on the metalwork: the band was polished to a continuous high shine along its full round profile, with extra attention paid to smoothing the curled terminals where the spirals meet in the center. The rounded inner band profile — adjusted from the original flat design per client feedback — required additional polishing passes to achieve an even curve on the inside surface.
Key note
The inner band profile was reworked from flat to fully rounded after casting plans were already underway, which meant the polishing sequence had to achieve an even curve on the inside surface rather than a flat face.
Pricing guidance
A simple no-stone gold ring built around wirework curls sits toward the lower end of custom pricing, since there is no stone sourcing or setting labor involved. Cost is driven almost entirely by the metal weight and the hand-finishing needed to keep the curled details clean and symmetrical. Karat and gold weight are the two levers that move the price most from there.
Moves price up ↑
  • ↑
Increasing the gold karat from 14k to 18k
  • ↑
Adding a heavier gauge wire for a more substantial feel
  • ↑
Adding stone accents at the center where the spirals meet
  • ↑
Adding engraving to the inside of the band
  • ↑
Designing additional spiral elements around the full band rather than just at the meeting point
Moves price down ↓
  • ↓
Reducing the wire gauge for a lighter-weight piece
  • ↓
Choosing 10k gold instead of 14k
  • ↓
Switching to gold-plated silver rather than solid gold
  • ↓
Simplifying to a single spiral rather than two meeting in the center
  • ↓
Choosing a smaller ring size, which reduces the overall metal weight
Questions people ask
Yes. This ring was built entirely from a client's own photos of her original ring and a hand-drawn sketch of the design concept. The process starts with a 3D render based on that reference material, which the client can review and request changes to before anything is cast. Most recreations converge on an accurate match within one or two rounds of feedback. A rough sketch is enough to start, as long as there are supporting photos to clarify the details.
A no-stone ring built from curled or spiral wirework sits toward the lower end of custom pricing because there is no stone sourcing or setting involved. The primary cost driver is the metal weight combined with the hand-finishing needed to keep thin curled details clean and symmetrical. Karat choice and wire gauge are what move the price most from there.
Yes, this is a common adjustment and was made on this exact ring after the first render. A flat inner profile is often the default in an initial 3D design, but it can be reworked to a fully rounded profile for comfort, similar to how a bangle bracelet is typically rounded on the inside. The change does add some additional finishing time since an even curve has to be polished all the way around the inside surface.
The full process typically takes around five to six weeks from first deposit to shipping. The design phase — the initial 3D render and any requested revisions — usually takes about a week. Once the design is approved, casting and finishing take approximately four to five weeks before the piece ships.
Yes, 14k gold is one of the most common choices for everyday rings because it balances durability with workability. It's harder than 18k gold, which contains more pure gold and is softer, but not as hard as 10k. For a thin wirework design like this one, 14k offers a good balance of strength to hold its shape while still being workable enough to create clean curled details.
Absolutely. A no-stone ring built purely from metalwork, like this spiral design, is a straightforward custom project. Without stone sourcing or setting involved, the focus is entirely on the wire shaping, symmetry, and finish of the metal. This also tends to keep the cost lower than a stone-set piece of similar complexity.
The main differences are gold purity, color, and price. 18k gold contains 75% pure gold, giving it a richer, slightly deeper yellow color, but it's also softer and more prone to scratching or bending over time. 14k gold contains about 58% pure gold, making it noticeably more durable for daily wear while still having a clear yellow gold color. For a thin band design like this one, many people choose 14k specifically for the added durability.
Yes, this is a normal part of the custom design process. On this ring, the client requested two changes after the first render — realigning the spiral elements more vertically and rounding the inside of the band — both of which were incorporated into a second render for approval. Typically one or two rounds of revision are enough to finalize a design before production begins. Changes at this stage do not affect the production timeline since nothing has been cast yet.
