Crowned Monogram Pendant in Rose Gold
$
Gold plated sterling silver
D. wanted a pendant built from a reference photo of initials paired with a crown, cut out rather than solid so the letters would stand on their own. The first render matched what he had in mind right away, and when the finished piece arrived he wrote that it looked great.
'It looks great. Exactly what I was looking for.' — on seeing the first render
'I received my pendent. It looks great.' — on delivery

How they made it distinctive
-
01
Cut-out construction chosen over a solid background so the letters and crown read as an open, dimensional emblem
-
02
Crown motif combined with interlocking initials to give the piece a heraldic, shield-like silhouette
-
03
Sized at three-quarters of an inch specifically to keep the piece wearable day to day rather than oversized
-
04
Matching rose gold chain sourced afterward so the full necklace reads as one continuous piece of metal
How you'd make it yours
Stone: this piece uses no stone; a new commission could add small accent stones to the crown or letters
Metal: this piece is gold plated sterling silver; the same cut-out design works in solid 14k or 18k rose gold
Background: this piece is cut out; a new commission could use a solid backing for a more plaque-like look
Engraving: the back of a new pendant could carry a date or short phrase
One of a kind: this exact pendant was designed for one client and is not reproduced — a new commission is an original piece inspired by this one, not a copy
Design changes made
Design matched the initial brief without major changes.
Who this is for
This piece is for someone who wants their initials represented as something more structured than a plain letter charm — a design with real shape and symbolism behind it. It suits someone who prefers an open, cut-out look to a solid, flat plaque, and who wants a pendant sized for daily wear rather than a large statement piece.
How it's made
Once the design was approved, the pendant was 3D printed in wax and attached to a wax tree inside a flask. The flask went into a kiln to burn out the wax, leaving a hollow mold of the piece. Molten rose gold plated sterling silver was then cast into that mold, and once cooled, the raw pendant was removed and prepared for finishing.
After casting, the piece was cleaned and polished to bring out the mirror finish visible across both the crown and the cut-out letters. Because the letters and crown are cut through rather than engraved, the open sections were cleaned by hand to keep sharp, even edges along every interior line. A matching rose gold chain was sourced separately and paired with the finished pendant to complete the piece.
Key note
The cut-out lettering meant every interior edge had to be hand-finished individually, since a polishing wheel alone can't reach the inside corners of an open design the way it can a solid surface.
Pricing guidance
A cut-out initial pendant with a crown motif in gold plated sterling silver sits toward the lower end of the price range for custom pendants. The main cost driver is the 3D design work needed to turn a reference image into a clean cut-out layout, since the metal usage itself is modest at this size. Choosing solid gold instead of a plated base is the biggest lever on price for a piece like this.
Moves price up ↑
- ↑ Upgrading from gold plated silver to solid 14k or 18k rose gold
- ↑ Increasing the pendant size beyond three-quarters of an inch, which adds more cut-out detail and metal
- ↑ Adding stone accents to the crown or letters
- ↑ Engraving the back of the pendant with an additional date or phrase
Moves price down ↓
- ↓ Reducing the pendant to a single initial rather than two interlocking letters
- ↓ Choosing a solid-background design instead of a cut-out, which requires less hand-finishing
- ↓ Selecting a thinner chain gauge
- ↓ Skipping the matching chain and using an existing chain instead
Questions people ask
Yes, a reference photo showing a letter layout or logo-style design can be turned into a 3D model and then a cast pendant. The design team rebuilds the layout digitally so it can be rendered as a cut-out or solid piece, and you review a photorealistic render before anything is cast. This pendant was built exactly this way, starting from a single reference photo. Minor adjustments can be made at the render stage before production begins.
Gold plated sterling silver is a sterling silver base with a layer of gold, in this case rose gold, applied over the surface. It gives the look and warmth of solid gold at a lower cost, but the plating is a surface coat rather than solid metal all the way through. With regular daily wear, plating gradually wears thinner over time, especially at points of friction. Re-plating is a standard jewelry service that can refresh the color when it starts to fade.
A cut-out pendant has its design elements, like letters or a crown, fully pierced through the metal so light passes through the open areas, giving it a lighter and more dimensional look. A solid-background pendant keeps the letters or design raised or engraved on a flat metal backing, which reads as a more plaque-like, substantial piece. Cut-out designs generally require more hand-finishing since every interior edge needs to be cleaned and polished individually. Both styles can be cast in the same metal options.
A cut-out monogram pendant with a crown detail in gold plated sterling silver sits toward the lower end of the pricing range for custom pendants, largely because the metal usage is modest at under an inch in size. The cost is driven more by the 3D design and hand-finishing work than by material. Choosing solid gold instead of a plated base is the factor that moves the price up the most. Simpler single-letter designs without a cut-out generally cost less.
The design phase for a custom pendant typically takes about one week, during which a 3D render is produced for approval. Once the design is approved, production takes approximately four to five weeks from casting through finishing. The full process from first approval to shipping generally falls within five to six weeks total. Sourcing a matching chain separately can add a little extra time if it is not ordered alongside the pendant.
Yes, a chain can be sourced and shipped separately if it wasn't included with the original order. The chain is typically matched to the pendant's metal color and finish so the full piece looks cohesive. Standard chain lengths like 18 or 20 inches are common choices depending on how the pendant is meant to sit. This does not affect the pendant itself, only adds a short additional shipping step.
Yes, the layout is fully custom, so the letters, crown style, or overall shape can be adjusted to fit a different monogram or symbol. The cut-out approach used here works well for angular, structured designs like this one, though a more rounded or script-style letter would change the look and finishing approach slightly. Any new design starts with a 3D render for review before casting. The same construction method applies regardless of which letters or symbol are used.
Yes, cut-out pendants cast in sterling silver are structurally solid once the metal is cast and cleaned, since the open areas are part of the original cast shape rather than a weak point added afterward. The main durability consideration is the plating wearing over time with regular contact against skin and clothing, not the cut-out structure itself. Avoiding harsh chemicals and removing the pendant before swimming or showering will help the plating last longer. The crown and letter elements are substantial enough at this size to resist bending under normal wear.
