Emerald-Cut Moissanite Ring with Hidden Halo in White Gold

14k white gold, moissanite, moissanite accents
J. wanted a second ring — a stand-in for travel so a more valuable piece could stay safely at home. He worked through several rounds of stone shape and setting details to get the proportions right, eventually settling on a custom-cut moissanite with a more elongated look after comparing it directly against the original sketch. When he picked up the finished ring, he wrote that it was one of the best experiences he'd had buying a ring.
'It's great thank you so much for all your help I'm so happy with it... this was one of the best experiences with buying a ring.' — on delivery

How they made it distinctive
-
01
Center moissanite custom cut narrower and longer than a standard emerald cut, for a more elongated silhouette the client specifically requested
-
02
Hidden halo placed beneath the center stone to add brilliance without altering the ring's clean top-down profile
-
03
Accent stones set only halfway down each side of the band, specifically to avoid rubbing against the finger during wear
-
04
Metal upgraded from sterling silver to 14k white gold for better durability around water and travel conditions
-

Designed intentionally as a secondary, lower-profile ring so a more valuable piece could be kept safely at home
How you'd make it yours
Stone type: this piece uses moissanite — a new commission could use cubic zirconia for lower cost or a lab/natural diamond for a different look
Metal: this piece is 14k white gold — the same design language works in sterling silver, yellow gold, or rose gold
Center stone shape: this piece uses a custom narrow emerald cut — a new piece could use a standard emerald, radiant, or oval cut
Accent coverage: this piece stops halfway down the band — a new commission could extend stones fully around or reduce them further
Engraving: the inside of the band can carry a different phrase, date, or initials on a new piece
One of a kind: this exact ring was designed for one client's measurements and stone preferences and is not reproduced — a new commission is an original piece inspired by this one
Design changes made
The center stone shape was adjusted twice — first correcting an early render that showed a radiant cut instead of the requested emerald cut, then custom-cutting the moissanite narrower and longer for a more elongated look. The metal was also changed from sterling silver to 14k white gold for better durability during travel and water exposure.
Who this is for
This piece is for someone who wants a ring they can wear without worrying about it — especially while traveling, swimming, or doing anything that puts a more valuable piece at risk. It's especially right if you already have a meaningful engagement ring and want a durable, good-looking stand-in for everyday situations where losing or damaging the real thing is a real concern.
How it's made
Once the design was approved, a wax model was produced using a 3D printer and attached to a wax tree inside a casting flask. The flask was placed in a kiln to burn out the wax, leaving a hollow mold, and molten 14k white gold was then cast into the mold under pressure to form the raw ring.
After casting, the ring was cleaned, polished, and finished. The hidden halo beneath the center stone was set first, followed by the custom-cut emerald-shaped center stone, secured with prongs. The round accent stones were then set by hand in a shared-prong style along the top half of each side of the band, stopping partway down to avoid contact with the finger. The inside of the band was engraved last with a short personal inscription.
Key note
The accent stones were deliberately set only halfway down the band rather than continuing fully around, a choice made specifically to prevent the stones from rubbing against the finger during wear.
Pricing guidance
An emerald-cut solitaire engagement ring with a hidden halo and half-band of accent stones in sterling silver or white gold sits toward the lower end for custom engagement rings of this style. Most of the cost comes from the center stone choice and any custom cutting, with the setting and band work adding a moderate amount on top. Moving between moissanite, lab diamond, and natural diamond is where the price shifts the most.
Moves price up ↑
- ↑ Upgrading the center stone from moissanite to a lab-grown or natural diamond
- ↑ Requesting a custom-cut center stone with a non-standard length-to-width ratio
- ↑ Extending the accent stones to run fully around the band instead of halfway
- ↑ Choosing platinum or 18k gold instead of sterling silver or 14k white gold
- ↑ Adding a larger center stone carat weight
Moves price down ↓
- ↓ Choosing cubic zirconia instead of moissanite for the center and accent stones
- ↓ Keeping the center stone at a standard cut and size rather than custom cutting it
- ↓ Reducing the number of accent stones in the band
- ↓ Staying with sterling silver rather than upgrading to white gold
- ↓ Omitting the hidden halo beneath the center stone
Questions people ask
Moissanite is a popular diamond alternative because it has similar brilliance and is more durable than most other diamond simulants, ranking 9.25 on the Mohs hardness scale compared to a diamond's 10. It costs significantly less than a natural or lab-grown diamond of the same size, which makes it a common choice for a secondary or travel ring. It does have a slightly different light refraction than diamond, sometimes described as more rainbow-colored sparkle versus a diamond's whiter flash. For daily or frequent wear, it holds up well and resists scratching under normal conditions.
A hidden halo is a ring of small accent stones set underneath the center stone, visible from the side profile but not from a straight-on top view. It adds extra sparkle and can make the center stone appear more substantial without changing the ring's clean, minimal look when viewed from above. It is a popular choice for clients who want a solitaire-style ring with added brilliance. The hidden halo does not affect the durability or setting security of the center stone.
Yes, moissanite can be custom cut to a non-standard length-to-width ratio, such as a narrower and more elongated emerald shape than what is typically available pre-cut. This differs from natural diamonds, where the raw crystal shape drives more variation in cut proportions, and lab-grown diamonds, which are usually cut to standardized ratios because that is what most buyers want. Custom cutting a moissanite adds modestly to the cost and some time to the sourcing process, but it allows for a more specific look. It is a good option when a client has a particular silhouette in mind that isn't available off the shelf.
White gold is significantly more durable than sterling silver and holds stones more securely over time, which matters most for a ring worn daily or exposed to water, chemicals, or physical activity. Sterling silver is softer and carries a higher risk of accent stones loosening, especially after repeated exposure to pools, hot tubs, or salt water. White gold also resists tarnishing better than silver. For a ring intended for travel or frequent wear, white gold is generally the more durable choice even though it costs somewhat more.
A ring with an emerald-cut center stone, hidden halo, and accent stones running halfway down the band typically falls on the lower end of custom engagement ring pricing when set with moissanite rather than diamond. The price moves up noticeably if the center stone is upgraded to a lab-grown or natural diamond, since the stone itself is usually the largest cost driver. Custom cutting the center stone adds a modest amount on top of the base setting cost. Metal choice between sterling silver and white gold also affects the final price, though less significantly than the stone choice.
The process typically takes about five to six weeks from deposit to shipping. The first one to two weeks cover design — a sketch, a 3D model, and a photorealistic render for approval, with adjustments made until the design is right. Once the design is approved and the majority of the balance is paid, production takes about four to five weeks, during which the stone is sourced or custom cut, the piece is cast, and then finished and set. Custom cutting a center stone can add a small amount of additional time to the sourcing stage.
Yes, accent stones can be set fully around the band instead of stopping halfway, though this increases the stone count and the labor involved in setting them. Stopping the stones partway down the band, as on this design, is a common choice for comfort, since it avoids placing stones directly where the ring contacts the finger and the palm side of the hand. A fully set band also affects how the ring can be resized later, since stone-set bands require more care during resizing. The halfway design offers a middle ground between visual impact and everyday comfort.
Yes, a short phrase, date, or initials can be engraved on the inside of the band, typically at no additional cost. Common choices include a meaningful phrase, a wedding date, or initials of the couple. The engraving is applied after the ring is cast and finished, as one of the final production steps. Engraving does not affect the structural integrity of the band when kept to a reasonable length.
