Lowercase Mu Pendant — White Gold with Diamond Accent
$$
14k white gold, natural diamond
A client came to us wanting a single lowercase letter pendant as a Christmas gift, working from his own sketch and a tight holiday deadline. He went back and forth on the sizing more than once, worried the piece would read as too small and not wanting to regret the scale once it was cast — so the design was enlarged before production to get the proportion right. When it arrived in time for the holiday, he wrote back: "She truly LOVES it!!!"

Size
Pendant approximately 20mm x 12.5mm (scaled up from initial 14.5mm x 12.5mm design); bail interior 5mm, fits up to 3mm chain.
How they made it distinctive
-
01
Single lowercase letter rendered in cursive script, scaled up from the original sketch after the client worried it would read as too small
-
02
Pear-shaped diamond set at the base of the letter's first stroke, placed to catch light without overwhelming the simple letterform
-
03
Bail sized to fit the client's own thin 1mm chain, confirmed before the design was finalized
-
04
Prongs shortened only after stone-setting, so the diamond sits secure and close against the metal rather than loose in an oversized mount
How you'd make it yours
Letter and script: this piece uses a lowercase cursive letter; a new commission could use a different letter, a block font, or an initial pair
Stone: this piece uses a natural pear-shaped diamond; a new commission could use a lab diamond or moissanite for a similar look at lower cost
Metal: this piece is 14k white gold; the same script letterform works equally well in yellow or rose gold
Scale: this piece was enlarged to roughly one inch; a new piece can be sized smaller or larger depending on preference
Engraving: the back of the letter pendant can carry a short inscription on a new piece
One of a kind: this exact pendant was designed for one client's letter and sizing preferences and is not reproduced — a new commission is an original piece inspired by this one, not a copy
Design changes made
The pendant was scaled up from the original dimensions in the client's sketch after he felt the first render looked too small and delicate to read clearly when worn. The bail and chain-fit allowance stayed the same through the resize.
Who this is for
This piece is for someone who wants a personal, minimal keepsake rather than a statement piece — a single letter that means something to the person wearing it. It's especially right for a gift-giver who wants something that feels specific and considered without being elaborate, and who's willing to sweat the small details, like getting the scale exactly right, to make sure it feels substantial once worn.
How it's made
Once the design was approved, a 3D-printed resin model was produced — the first physical version of the letter shared with the client as a preview before any metal was committed. That resin was then set into investment plaster and fired in a kiln to burn out the material, leaving a hollow mold. Molten 14k white gold was cast into the mold under pressure, producing the raw pendant before cleanup.
After casting, the piece was cleaned, polished, and finished to a smooth, rounded profile — the prongs in particular were shortened and refined once the pear-shaped diamond was set, since the raw cast prongs run longer than the finished setting requires. The diamond was hand-set into its prong mount at the base of the letter's first stroke. The bail was finished last to confirm it still cleared the client's own 1mm chain.
Key note
The prongs on the diamond setting are left intentionally long during casting and shortened only after the stone is set — a sequencing choice that protects the stone from being forced into an undersized setting.
Pricing guidance
A simple letter pendant with a single small diamond accent sits toward the lower end of the price range for custom pendant work. Most of the cost comes from the 14k gold content and the hand-finishing needed to keep a cursive letter shape clean and smooth, rather than from the stone itself. Stone size and metal karat are what move the price from there.
Moves price up ↑
- ↑ Upgrading from a single small diamond to a larger stone or adding more accent stones along the letter
- ↑ Increasing the metal karat from 14k to 18k gold
- ↑ Scaling the pendant up significantly beyond a dainty size, which increases metal weight
- ↑ Choosing platinum instead of white gold for the letter
Moves price down ↓
- ↓ Switching the diamond to a lab-grown diamond or moissanite at the same size
- ↓ Reducing the pendant to a smaller, more delicate scale
- ↓ Choosing sterling silver or gold-plated silver instead of solid 14k gold
- ↓ Omitting the stone accent entirely for a plain letter pendant
Questions people ask
Yes, a single-letter pendant is a common and straightforward custom request. The letter can be rendered in block, serif, or cursive script depending on your preference, and a small accent stone can be added at a natural point along the letterform. Production generally follows the same casting process as any small pendant — a 3D model, a resin preview, then metal casting and finishing. The whole piece typically takes around four to five weeks from design approval.
Most pendants default to roughly one inch, which reads clearly from a normal viewing distance, but a half-inch piece can look noticeably more delicate once cast than it does on paper. It helps to compare the planned dimensions against a coin or a ruler before approving a design, since renders can be difficult to judge for scale. If you're unsure, asking for the design to be scaled slightly larger is a reasonable adjustment before production begins. Once cast, resizing a solid letter pendant is more limited than resizing a ring.
Natural and lab-grown diamonds are chemically and visually identical — the same hardness, brilliance, and clarity grading apply to both. The only real difference is origin: one is mined, the other is grown in a controlled setting. For a small pear-shaped accent stone like this, a lab diamond would look the same to the eye while typically costing less than a natural stone of the same size and grade. Either option holds up equally well to daily wear.
A simple pendant typically takes about one week for the design phase, including a render for approval, followed by three to four weeks of production once the design is finalized. Production includes 3D printing a resin model, casting the metal, and finishing and setting the stone. Rush timelines are sometimes possible around holidays but are not guaranteed, so it helps to start well ahead of any deadline. This piece was completed in about four weeks total, in time for a holiday deadline.
A pendant with a single small stone and modest metal weight sits toward the lower end of custom pendant pricing. The main cost driver is the gold content and the labor to hand-finish a clean letterform, not the stone itself, since the accent diamond is small. Upgrading the metal karat or stone size would move the price up, while a lab-grown stone or a smaller scale would bring it down.
Yes, the pendant and chain are generally priced and sourced separately, so you can pair the letter pendant with whatever chain style and length you prefer. The only constraint is the bail opening size, which is typically built to accommodate a chain or clasp up to about 3mm wide unless a wider bail is requested. If you already own a chain you'd like to use, it's worth confirming the width works with the bail before the design is finalized.
A polished 14k white gold pendant holds its shine well with normal care and occasional cleaning with a soft cloth. White gold is typically rhodium-plated for extra brightness, and that plating can wear thin over years of daily contact, at which point replating restores the original finish. This is a routine, inexpensive service offered by most jewelers. The smooth, rounded finish on a cast letter like this also tends to resist scratching better than sharp-edged designs.
