Monogram Gold Pendant Inspired by a Family Keepsake

$$$
14k yellow gold, lab-grown diamond, black enamel

K. wanted to recreate a pendant that belonged to her boyfriend's grandfather, adding her boyfriend's own initials alongside his grandfather's to connect the two generations. She sketched out her idea for how the diamond and lettering should sit, and worked with the design team through a render to get the proportions and black enamel detailing right. When it arrived, she wrote simply: 'I love it! Thank you so much.'

How they made it distinctive
  • 01
Design inspired by an existing heirloom-style pendant rather than created from scratch, matched closely to the original photo and description
  • 02
Three initials combine both grandfather and grandson, connecting two generations in one piece
  • 03
Black enamel chosen over a plain engraving for both contrast and improved durability over time
  • 04
Roped border and starburst corner engravings mirror the vintage-style detailing of the reference piece
  • 05
A single diamond accent placed above the lettering rather than surrounding it, keeping the monogram as the visual focus
How you'd make it yours
Stone: this piece uses a lab-grown diamond; a new commission could use a natural diamond or a different gemstone for color
Metal: this piece is 14k yellow gold; the same design language works in 18k yellow gold, white gold, or rose gold
Lettering: this piece uses three black-enamel initials; a new piece could use a name, a date, or a different initial arrangement
Chain: this piece pairs with a 3mm rope chain; a new commission could use a cable, curb, or oval-link chain in a different thickness
Border detail: the roped edge and starburst corners are specific to this design; a new piece could simplify or change this framing
One of a kind: this exact pendant was designed for one couple and is not reproduced — a new commission is an original piece inspired by this one, not a copy
Design changes made
The client requested seeing the design both with and without black enamel on the lettering before approving the final version — she chose to keep the black enamel for contrast and durability. Pendant size and chain style were also finalized during the design phase based on reference measurements from a prior piece.
Who this is for
This piece is for someone who wants to give a gift that connects generations rather than just looking nice on its own. It's especially right if you're drawing inspiration from a piece that already means something to someone in your life, and want to add a personal layer — like a shared initial — without replacing what came before.
How it's made
Once the design was approved, the pendant was 3D printed in wax and attached to a wax tree inside a flask. The flask was placed in a kiln to burn out the wax, leaving a hollow mold, and molten 14k yellow gold was poured into the mold to cast the piece. After cooling, the raw casting was removed from the mold and prepared for the finishing stages, including cleaning and initial polishing. The roped border was polished to a bright finish while the central face was left with a brushed texture for contrast, applied by hand rather than shown in the digital render. The three initials were recessed and filled with black enamel for durability and visual contrast against the brushed gold, and the single round lab-grown diamond was set by hand above the lettering using a prong setting.
Key note
The brushed background texture seen on the finished pendant was applied entirely by hand after casting, which is why it could not be accurately shown in the digital render the client approved.
Pricing guidance
A monogrammed gold pendant of this size and detail level sits in the mid range for custom pendant work. Most of the cost comes from the gold weight at this scale plus the hand-finishing needed for the enameled lettering and engraved detailing. Stone choice and chain selection are the two biggest variables that move the price from there.
Moves price up ↑
  • ↑
Upgrading from 10k to 14k or 18k gold increases the gold content cost
  • ↑
Choosing a natural diamond instead of a lab-grown diamond for the center stone
  • ↑
Adding a thicker or heavier chain style, such as a 3mm rope or curb chain
  • ↑
Increasing the pendant size beyond the current 1 x 1.5 inch dimensions
  • ↑
Adding enamel or engraving to additional surfaces of the pendant
Moves price down ↓
  • ↓
Choosing 10k gold instead of 14k to reduce material cost
  • ↓
Selecting a thinner 2mm chain instead of a 3mm option
  • ↓
Omitting the diamond accent entirely for a plain monogram pendant
  • ↓
Reducing the pendant to a smaller size
  • ↓
Leaving the lettering without black enamel fill
Questions people ask
Yes, a photo along with a description of size and details is usually enough to start a 3D design. The design team builds a digital render based on the photo and client input, and the client reviews and requests adjustments before anything is cast. Exact recreation depends on photo quality and clarity of description, but the overall look, proportions, and key details can typically be matched closely. Minor differences from the original piece are normal since the recreation is built from the approved render rather than the original object.
Enamel is a more durable option than other blackening methods like oxidation, which can wear or rub off with handling. It is applied into recessed lettering or detailing and fired to bond with the metal, giving it good resistance to fading with normal wear. It can still show wear over many years of daily contact, but it holds up significantly better than a surface-level blackening treatment. If it does fade eventually, re-application is a standard jewelry service.
Lab-grown diamonds are optically, chemically, and physically identical to natural diamonds — the only differences are origin and price. A lab-grown diamond is created in a controlled environment rather than mined from the earth, but it has the same hardness, brilliance, and durability as a natural stone of the same cut and quality. For a small accent stone like the one on this pendant, choosing lab-grown is a common way to include a genuine diamond while keeping costs lower. Both options require the same prong setting and care.
A pendant combining gold, a diamond accent, and enamel-filled lettering at this size falls in the mid range for custom pendant work. The gold weight, the diamond quality selected, and the chain style chosen are the main factors that move the price up or down. Simpler monogram pendants without a stone or enamel detail would typically fall into a lower price range.
The design phase typically takes about one week, during which a 3D render is created and refined based on feedback. Once the design is approved, production usually takes three to four weeks, covering casting, finishing, enamel work, and stone setting. Shipping typically adds a few more days on top of that. The full process from deposit to delivery generally runs around five to six weeks.
Yes, the pendant is designed to work with a standard jewelry bail, so it can be worn on a different chain at any time. Chain style and thickness affect both the look and the price, with thicker chains like 3mm rope or curb styles costing more than thinner cable chains. Some clients choose to let the recipient pick their own chain separately rather than bundling it with the pendant. The bail size should be confirmed to make sure it fits a new chain's thickness.
Yes, initials can be arranged in a traditional monogram order or in the simple left-to-right order used on this piece, and the lettering style can be changed to script, block, or other fonts. The size and spacing of the letters depend on how many initials are included and the overall pendant dimensions. Enamel fill is optional and can be added to any engraved lettering for contrast. These are all decisions made during the 3D design review before casting.
Yes, a rectangular gold pendant with a monogram and understated diamond accent is a common daily-wear style for men, especially on a sturdier chain like a 3mm rope or curb link. The brushed background and black enamel lettering keep the design legible and masculine rather than delicate. A 20-inch chain length is a common choice for this type of pendant to sit comfortably at mid-chest. The piece is substantial enough for regular wear without being overly ornate.
