Engraved Flower Pendant — Raised Script in Yellow Gold
$$
Gold-plated silver, 14k yellow gold plating
A father wanted to turn a flower photo and three words, "he loves me," into something his daughter could actually wear. He went back and forth on size so it wouldn't feel too big on her, and asked for the phrase engraved into the center of the flower rather than printed separately, so the words feel like part of the bloom itself.

How they made it distinctive
-

Phrase engraved into the center of the bloom itself, so the words read as part of the flower rather than separate text
-
03
Matte-finished background added specifically to make the raised, textured petals stand out more
-
04
Sized to about 1 inch after the client weighed how large the recipient would realistically wear it
How you'd make it yours
Design: this piece uses a daisy bloom; a new commission could use a different flower or botanical motif
Finish: this piece pairs a matte background with polished petals; a new piece could be fully polished or fully matte
Lettering: this piece has the phrase engraved into the center; a new commission could use raised lettering instead
Metal: this piece is gold-plated silver; the same design works in solid 10k or 14k gold
Shape: this piece is a solid round plaque; a new commission could use a cutout silhouette of the flower instead
One of a kind: this exact pendant was designed for one client's chosen phrase and photo, and is not reproduced — a new commission is an original piece inspired by this one
Design changes made
The client asked to see the lettering engraved rather than raised after the first sketch, though the team moved forward with the raised rendering for his review before finalizing the approach. The final piece uses a matte-finished background to help the raised petal pattern stand out more clearly.
Who this is for
This is for someone who wants a sentimental phrase to feel built into the jewelry, not stamped on top of it. It suits a gift-giver who has a specific image in mind, like a photo of a real flower, and wants that exact shape reproduced rather than a generic look picked from a catalog.
How it's made
Once the design was approved, the piece moved from a 3D digital model to a physical wax version, 3D-printed and attached to a wax tree inside a flask. The flask was fired in a kiln to burn out the wax, leaving a hollow mold, and molten silver was poured into that mold to cast the raised flower pattern in one piece. After cooling, the casting was removed from the tree and cleaned up before finishing began.
The petals and center engraving were polished to a bright, reflective finish, while the flat background areas around the flower were given a matte finish to create contrast between the raised design and its surroundings. The piece was then plated in 14k yellow gold to achieve its finished color. A bail was attached to accommodate chains up to 3mm, and the pendant was fitted to its 1.5mm cable chain before final quality inspection.
Key note
The matte finish was applied specifically to the background around the petals, not the petals themselves, so the raised flower pattern would catch the light while the surrounding surface stays flat and non-reflective.
Pricing guidance
A round engraved flower pendant at this scale sits toward the lower end of custom pendant pricing. Most of the cost comes from the 3D modeling and the raised, textured petal detail, which requires more finishing work than a flat engraved disc. Metal choice and pendant size are what move the price most from there.
Moves price up ↑
- ↑ Upgrading from gold-plated silver to solid 10k or 14k gold
- ↑ Increasing the pendant diameter beyond 1 inch, which uses more metal and finishing time
- ↑ Adding a cutout version of the flower instead of a solid plaque
- ↑ Engraving both the front and back of the pendant
- ↑ Adding color accents or enamel fill to the petals
Moves price down ↓
- ↓ Reducing the pendant diameter to 0.75 inch or smaller
- ↓ Choosing a flat engraved design instead of the raised, dimensional petal pattern
- ↓ Skipping the matte-finish contrast step and leaving the piece fully polished
- ↓ Using a simpler chain style instead of a cable chain
- ↓ Omitting the custom chain and using a plain existing one
Questions people ask
Gold-plated silver has a layer of real gold bonded to a sterling silver base, and that plating will gradually wear thinner with daily wear, especially where the pendant rubs against skin or clothing. A 14k gold plating tends to hold up longer than lower-karat plating because the gold layer is denser. Most people get one to three years of good wear before the color starts to fade, depending on how often the piece is worn. Re-plating is a standard jewelry service when that happens, and the silver base underneath stays intact.
Yes, a cutout version that follows the outline of the flower's petals is a common alternative to a solid round plaque. It changes the look significantly — a cutout reads as more open and delicate, while a solid disc with a raised flower feels more substantial and protects any center engraving. The main tradeoff is durability: a cutout has thinner, more exposed edges than a solid plaque. Either version can carry the same engraved center text.
The full process typically runs about five to six weeks from deposit to delivery. The first week covers the 3D design and render, where you review and approve the look before anything is made. Production itself, including the wax model, casting, and finishing, takes another four to five weeks. Updates are usually shared at the resin-model stage and again when the piece ships.
A pendant like this, cast in gold-plated silver at about an inch across, falls toward the lower end of custom pendant pricing. The cost is driven mainly by the 3D design work and the raised, textured petal detail rather than by the metal itself. Choosing solid gold instead of plated silver, or increasing the size, are the two factors that move the price up the most.
Yes, engraved (recessed) lettering and raised lettering are both achievable in casting, and the choice is mostly aesthetic. Raised lettering tends to catch more light and read more clearly at a glance, while engraved lettering sits flush with the surface and can feel more subtle. Either style can be combined with a matte or polished background to adjust how much the text stands out.
A 1-inch pendant generally pairs well with a chain in the 1.5mm to 2mm range — thick enough to support the pendant's weight without looking disproportionate, and thin enough to stay comfortable for daily wear. For length, 18 to 20 inches sits at the collarbone, while 24 to 30 inches allows the pendant to hang lower and layer with other necklaces. A cable chain is a common, versatile choice that works well with a round plaque pendant like this.
Not precisely — photorealistic renders are a close approximation, but the actual luster and tone of plated gold can vary slightly from the digital image once the piece is cast and finished. This is normal across custom jewelry production and not specific to any one design. The overall color family and finish type will match what was approved; small variations in shine and warmth are expected.
Yes, the pendant's bail is typically sized to fit chains up to about 3mm wide, so most existing necklace chains within that range will work. If you want to use your own chain, it helps to confirm the clasp and width beforehand so the bail can be sized correctly during production. Otherwise, a chain can be sourced and priced alongside the pendant itself.
