Custom JOYCITY Word Pendant in Sterling Silver

$
Sterling silver, black enamel

G. wanted a single word turned into a wearable pendant, sketching out the exact letterforms and font he had in mind before the design even began. He asked for the bail to sit centered over the word rather than off to the side, a small detail that mattered enough to send a second sketch to get it right. When it arrived, he wrote: 'I love it! The pendant came out great.'

  • 03
Black enamel fill chosen over antiquing for a bolder, more solid contrast
  • 04
Letter thickness increased after reviewing a sample piece to achieve a bolder look
  • 05
Complimentary resin model included with delivery as a physical record of the piece's casting process
How you'd make it yours
Metal: this piece is sterling silver — a new commission could use 14k white, yellow, or rose gold for a different tone and weight
Finish: this piece uses black enamel fill — a new piece could use antiquing, a different enamel color, or a plain polished look
Word length: this piece spells a single word at 2-3 inches — a new commission could be longer, shorter, or use a phrase
Bail placement: this piece has a centered bail — a new piece could use an offset bail depending on the word's shape
Chain: this piece includes an 18-inch cable chain — a new commission could use a different length or chain style
One of a kind: this exact pendant was designed for one client's word and is not reproduced — a new commission is an original piece inspired by this one, not a copy
Design changes made
The client requested the bail be repositioned to sit centered above the word rather than offset, matching his original concept sketch rather than a standard reference piece. He also specified black enamel fill and a thicker letter profile after seeing a sample piece from another project.
Who this is for
This piece is for someone who wants a word, name, or phrase turned into a bold graphic statement rather than a delicate script nameplate. It's especially right if you already have a specific font or sketch in mind and want that exact look carried through to the finished piece.
How it's made
Once the design was approved, the pendant was first 3D printed as a wax model, which was attached to a wax tree and set inside a flask. The flask was placed in a kiln to burn out the wax, leaving a hollow mold shaped exactly like the lettering and bail. Molten sterling silver was then cast into that mold under heat and pressure, producing the raw pendant once it cooled and was removed. After casting, the piece was cleaned and polished to bring out a bright finish on the raised letter outlines. Black enamel was then applied and cured inside the recessed areas of each letter, creating the contrast between the dark fill and the polished silver edges. The centered bail was finished and polished last, along with the attached cable chain and lobster clasp.
Key note
The client received the resin model used to cast the pendant along with the finished piece — a physical record of the exact shape poured into metal.
Pricing guidance
A sterling silver word pendant with enamel fill and a custom letterform sits toward the lower end of the price range for custom pendants. Most of the cost comes from the 3D modeling of custom typography and the hand-applied enamel work, rather than the metal itself. Length, letter thickness, and finish choice are what move the price from there.
Moves price up ↑
  • ↑
Upgrading from sterling silver to 14k white or yellow gold
  • ↑
Extending the word length beyond 2-3 inches, requiring more metal and modeling time
  • ↑
Adding a second color of enamel or a two-tone finish
  • ↑
Increasing letter thickness or adding dimensional depth to the lettering
  • ↑
Adding a matching bracelet or earring in the same lettering style
Moves price down ↓
  • ↓
Shortening the word or using fewer letters
  • ↓
Omitting the enamel fill for a plain polished finish
  • ↓
Choosing a thinner letter profile, reducing metal weight
  • ↓
Skipping the complimentary chain upgrade for a simpler chain style
  • ↓
Using a standard block font rather than a custom sans-serif rendering
Questions people ask
Black enamel is a hard, glass-like coating fused into the recessed areas of the letters, and it holds up well to normal daily wear. It is more durable than paint-based fills because it is cured at high heat and bonds to the metal rather than sitting on top of it. Over years of wear, enamel can chip if the piece is knocked hard against a surface, but it will not fade or rub off from skin contact the way some coatings do. Avoiding harsh jewelry cleaners with abrasive chemicals will help it last longer.
Yes, custom fonts are a common request for word and name pendants. The process starts with a sketch or a reference font the client provides, which is then built into a 3D computer model so the exact letterforms, spacing, and proportions can be reviewed before anything is cast. This allows for specific details like letter thickness, a particular sans-serif style, or custom spacing between letters. A render is shared for approval before production begins so the font choice can be confirmed.
A sterling silver word pendant with enamel detailing typically falls toward the lower end of the pricing range for custom jewelry. The main cost drivers are the 3D design work needed to create custom lettering and the hand-finishing and enamel application, not the silver itself. Longer words, thicker letters, or upgrading to gold will increase the cost from there.
From design approval to completion, a piece like this typically takes about three to four weeks to produce. The process starts with a wax 3D print, which is cast in metal, then cleaned, polished, and finished with enamel work before quality inspection. Design and render approval usually adds another one to two weeks before production begins, depending on how quickly revisions are finalized.
Sterling silver is a durable and widely used metal for everyday jewelry, though it is softer than gold and can show minor scratches over time with heavy use. It will also tarnish gradually when exposed to air and moisture, but regular wear and occasional polishing keeps it bright. For a pendant with enamel detailing like this one, the silver structure holds up well as long as it isn't repeatedly knocked against hard surfaces. Many people choose silver specifically for its lighter weight and lower cost compared to gold.
Yes, bail placement is a flexible design choice and can be positioned centered above the design, offset to one side, or anywhere else that keeps the piece balanced when worn. A centered bail keeps longer or asymmetrical pendants, like word pendants, hanging level rather than tilting to one side. This kind of placement decision is typically confirmed during the 3D render stage before the piece goes into production.
Enamel is a glass-based material that is applied and then heat-cured into the recessed parts of a design, producing a smooth, glossy, and very durable black fill. Antiquing, by contrast, is a chemical oxidation process that darkens the metal itself in recessed areas, leaving the raised surfaces polished bright by contrast. Enamel tends to hold its solid black color longer and resists wear better, while antiquing can gradually soften or lighten with repeated polishing. Both achieve a similar visual contrast effect but through different materials and processes.
Many custom silver pendants include a complimentary chain as part of the base price, though the length and style can vary by project. A standard option is an 18-inch cable chain in a matching metal with a secure lobster clasp closure. If a different chain length, width, or style is wanted, that can usually be arranged as part of the design conversation before production begins.
