Birthstone Cluster Pendant — Family Gems in Yellow Gold
$$$
14k yellow gold, lab-grown emerald, lab-grown sapphire, lab-grown emerald, aquamarine
A father wanted to gather his family into one pendant — birthstones for the people who matter most, arranged like planets around two larger center stones. The design went through a few rounds of refinement, landing on a cluster of five lab-grown stones in yellow gold with a matching box chain. He picked it up in April to give her for a May birthday, timing the shipment so she wouldn't see it early.
'Thank you, Carrie. It's been a pleasure working with you on this.' — on final payment

How they made it distinctive
-
01
Five birthstones arranged in a cluster rather than a row — the two larger stones represent the parents and the three smaller ones represent their children
-
02
Bezel settings used throughout so every stone sits secure and smooth, without prongs that could catch on clothing
-
03
Aquamarine chosen specifically as a pale accent stone to sit alongside the more saturated emerald and sapphire
-
04
All colored stones sourced as lab-grown, keeping the piece more affordable while allowing for larger, more vivid stones
-
05
Yellow gold box chain matched to the pendant metal for a cohesive finished look
How you'd make it yours
Stone type: this piece uses lab-grown emerald and sapphire — a new commission could use natural stones for the same look at a higher cost
Stone count: this piece uses five birthstones — a new commission could represent more or fewer family members
Metal: this piece is 14k yellow gold — the same cluster design works in white or rose gold
Chain: this piece uses an 18-inch box chain — a new commission could use a cable or diamond-cut chain in a different length
Accents: this piece uses birthstones only — a new commission could add small diamond accents to break up the cluster
One of a kind: this exact pendant was designed for one family and is not reproduced — a new commission is an original piece inspired by this one, not a copy
Design changes made
The original concept of stacked birthstones was simplified to a cluster of five stones — a larger emerald and sapphire at the center with three smaller birthstones arranged around them — after discussing that a cleaner composition would be easier to wear day to day.
Who this is for
This piece is for someone who wants a family represented in a single wearable design rather than scattered across separate pieces. It's especially right if you want a pendant with real presence at the neckline that still reads as one cohesive design rather than a simple string of stones.
How it's made
Once the yellow gold design was approved, the piece began with a design quality check to confirm every stone was accurately specified and sourced before any metal work began. A resin model was then 3D-printed and shared with the client so he could see the exact shape and proportions of the cluster before casting. The resin was attached to a wax tree, invested in a mold, and fired in a kiln to burn away the resin, leaving a hollow cavity. Molten 14k yellow gold was then cast into that cavity to form the raw pendant.
After casting, the pendant was cleaned up and polished to a mirror finish across the rounded bezel surfaces. Each of the five stones — the center emerald and sapphire, and the smaller emerald and aquamarine accents — was then set by hand into its own individually formed bezel, securing the stones fully around their girdles rather than relying on prongs. The finished pendant was strung on a matching 14k yellow gold box chain.
Key note
The pendant's five stones each sit in their own separately formed bezel rather than a single shared setting, which is why the cluster reads as overlapping circles instead of one continuous surface.
Pricing guidance
A multi-stone bezel-set birthstone cluster pendant in 14k gold sits in the mid range for custom pendant work. Most of the cost comes from the number of individually hand-set bezels rather than the stones themselves, since lab-grown colored stones are relatively inexpensive at these sizes. Chain style and gold karat are the next biggest levers on the final price.
Moves price up ↑
- ↑ Increasing the number of individual bezel settings beyond five stones
- ↑ Using larger center stones, which require larger bezels and more metal
- ↑ Upgrading from lab-grown to natural emerald and sapphire center stones
- ↑ Choosing platinum or 18k gold instead of 14k
- ↑ Adding a longer or heavier chain style
Moves price down ↓
- ↓ Reducing the stone count to three instead of five
- ↓ Using smaller accent stones throughout
- ↓ Choosing a lighter-gauge chain
- ↓ Using sterling silver instead of gold
- ↓ Simplifying the cluster to a single center stone with fewer accents
Questions people ask
Yes. Lab-grown emeralds and sapphires are chemically and optically identical to their natural counterparts — same hardness, same color range, same brilliance. The only differences are origin and price, with lab-grown stones typically costing significantly less. For a cluster pendant like this, where several stones are used together, lab-grown stones make it possible to use larger, more vivid stones without a steep cost increase.
A bezel setting is one of the most secure and durable options available because a continuous rim of metal wraps fully around the stone's girdle rather than relying on a few thin prongs. This makes it much less likely for a stone to catch on clothing or loosen over time. It's a common choice for pendants meant for daily wear, since there are no raised prong tips to bend or snag.
A multi-stone birthstone cluster pendant in 14k gold with bezel settings sits in the mid range for custom pendant work. The primary cost driver is the labor of hand-setting each stone in its own bezel, not the stones themselves, especially when lab-grown colored stones are used. Chain style, gold karat, and the number of stones are the main variables that move the price up or down.
The design phase — sketch, 3D model, and rendered preview — typically takes about ten days from deposit to an approved design. Once the design is approved and a majority payment is made, production including casting, polishing, and stone setting generally takes around four weeks. Total turnaround from deposit to delivery is usually five to six weeks on a standard timeline, though schedules can flex around a specific date if needed.
Yes. Small diamond accents can be added to break up a cluster of colored stones without dramatically increasing the cost, especially when lab-grown diamonds are used, since very small stones carry a low material cost. It's a common way to add sparkle and contrast between larger colored stones. The design can also be shown both with and without diamonds before anything is finalized.
A box chain is made of small square links that sit close together, giving it a smooth, slightly stiffer feel and a clean, structured look. A cable chain uses oval links and has a more classic, slightly more flexible drape. Box chains are a popular choice for pendants because they hang straight and showcase the pendant clearly, though wider box links can be more visible against the neck than a fine cable chain.
Yes, aquamarine works well as an accent stone because its pale blue-green tone provides a soft contrast next to more saturated stones like emerald and sapphire. It's a fairly durable stone for everyday wear, ranking 7.5-8 on the Mohs hardness scale, similar to emerald. Because aquamarine is naturally light in color, it can sometimes photograph paler than it appears in person, so seeing it in natural light gives the truest sense of its color.
The pendant itself is a fixed cluster design and isn't intended to be resized, but the chain length can typically be adjusted or swapped for a different length if needed. Standard chain lengths for pendants like this range from 16 to 20 inches, with 18 inches being the most common. If a different drop length is wanted, that's usually an easy adjustment compared to altering the pendant itself.
