From there, she worked with Master Designer Michelle to refine the concept and consider how the pearl could be held by the whale in a way that felt natural, while also ensuring the design could be translated into a wearable piece of custom jewelry.

This is where the creative idea began to evolve into a practical jewelry design. AI provided a starting point, but turning that idea into a real piece required careful consideration of proportion, structure, scale, wearability, and how the gemstones would be incorporated.

Creating custom jewelry isn’t simply about producing an interesting image. A successful design needs to work as a physical object—and that meant refining the original concept so it could become something Nikki could actually wear and enjoy.

With the initial direction established, the next stage was to fine-tune the details and transform the concept into a refined custom pendant.

 

Refining the Vision

With the overall concept established, attention turned to the relationship between the whale and the pearl, the most important part of the design.

The whale’s silhouette needed to feel balanced, with the body, tail, and fins working together as one clean, elegant form. At the same time, the pearl needed to sit naturally beneath the whale, creating the impression that it was being held, protected, and nurtured rather than simply attached to its belly.

Every element was considered in relation to the other. The proportions of the whale, the size and position of the pearl, and the space between the two all played a role in creating the feeling Nikki envisioned. Even something as small as an upward-turning tail could give the design a feeling of joy compared to a downward-turning one. These are the small adjustments that are possible when creating a truly custom piece of jewelry.

The design also needed to feel elegant and contemporary rather than cartoon-like, recognizable and full of character, while still sophisticated enough to become a fine-jewelry pendant.

Seeing It Before Holding It

Once the design was refined, it was time to take the concept from a drawing into three dimensions. A sketch can show the basic idea, but a piece of jewelry exists in three-dimensional space. The thickness of the metal, the proportions of the pendant, the position of the pearl, and the way the piece will look from different angles all need to be considered.

Using 3D CAD jewelry design, the whale pendant was developed into a detailed digital model. This allowed us to refine the shape and proportions of the whale, evaluate the pearl’s position beneath its belly, and make sure the design translated effectively from a two-dimensional concept into a wearable pendant.

One of the most exciting moments in a custom jewelry project is when the client can finally see the design as though it already exists. The 3D render gave Nikki a realistic preview of her custom pendant before it was manufactured.

She could see the polished whale silhouette, the placement of the natural pearl, and the overall proportions of the finished necklace. This stage is especially valuable when creating a one-of-a-kind piece because it gives the client an opportunity to approve the design before it becomes physical.
