How We Turned Kristen Liu-Wong’s Art Into Wearable Jewelry
On opening night, guests were able to see the entire creative lineage: the original artwork, a sculptural interpretation of that imagery, and the finished pendant displayed beside it. This visual conversation between art and jewelry set the tone for a collaboration rooted in storytelling, craftsmanship, and artistic transformation.
In a one-of-one fine-jewelry collaboration between JewelryThis and artist Kristen Liu-Wong, created for the debut of her exhibition Animal Instinct at Corey Helford Gallery. The pendant Oceana’s Peal pendant represents a rare moment where an artist’s visual world steps beyond the canvas and becomes something intimate, something you can hold, wear, and treasure.
The Story Behind Oceana’s Pearl Pendant
Kristen Liu-Wong has built her career on richly patterned, boldly colored, narrative-driven paintings. Her work often blends surreal humor with personal symbolism, creating scenes that are both inviting and emotionally charged. With the Oceana’s Pearl Pendant, she ventured into a brand-new medium, fine jewelry.

“I wanted to make a pendant that felt like a treasure – something valuable that can be cherished but also exemplifies the bold, figurative nature of my art.” – Kristen Liu-Wong
This guiding sentiment shaped every decision in the design process. The team at JewelryThis approached the project as more than a technical translation; it was an opportunity to preserve the emotional resonance of Liu-Wong’s imagery while giving it new form and purpose. The collaboration became a conversation between two creative worlds, her painting language and the studio’s use of advanced technologies and sculptural approach to jewelry

How the Artwork Became a Pendant
Transforming a two-dimensional illustration into a three-dimensional piece of jewelry requires an understanding of both aesthetics and physics. We began by studying Liu-Wong’s original drawing; its curves, symbols, emotional tone, and composition to uncover what elements were essential to preserve in a wearable format.

Preserving Kristen Lui- Wong’s the Artist’s Style in Jewelry
Liu-Wong’s signature figurative style relies on bold outlines, expressive forms, and intricate patterns. The team had to imagine how each of these elements could exist in metal rather than paint. Lines became raised contours that cast subtle shadows. Patterning became texture. Emotional expression became a physical gesture in the pendant’s curves and negative spaces. Even the placement of the pearl was guided by the symbolism in her artwork, ensuring it remained the emotional center of the design.

Craftsmanship Behind the Scenes
Once the artwork was sculpturally interpreted, We moved into the technical phase. The pendant was digitally modeled to explore depth, balance, and wearability, the most crucial considerations when translating art into jewelry. This digital sculpture was then turned into a physical piece using lost-wax casting, a traditional technique that captures even the smallest details. After casting, the pendant was hand-finished and plated in 14K gold, giving the surface a luminous glow that highlights every sculptural contour. A radiant pearl was carefully set to complete the piece, adding softness and symbolic meaning.

Why Oceana’s Pearl Pendant Resonates
Oceana’s Pearl Pendant resonates because it is more than a piece of jewelry,it is a bridge between artistic mediums. Collectors are drawn to objects that embody narrative and intention, and this pendant carries both. The collaboration opens a new avenue for experiencing Liu-Wong’s art, allowing admirers to engage with her world on a personal and tactile level.
For us at JewelryThis, the pendant exemplifies what is possible when an artist’s imagination meets cutting-edge jewelry craftsmanship. While it is a one-of-one piece, its existence signals a growing movement: art-jewelry hybrids that feel both expressive and intimate, both sculptural and wearable.
