When Travis first reached out to us, it wasn’t simply to design a piece of jewelry; it was to tell a story. He wanted to create something that truly celebrated his wife’s passion and profession. As an upland biologist, her life’s work centers around the conservation and management of wild bird species. Together, they travel across the country in pursuit of upland birds with their four beloved German Shorthaired Pointers; Dash, Bandit, Promise, and Lola.

Over the years, Travis had gifted her many beautiful pieces, but none captured the essence of their story. The dogs never looked right, and the birds felt generic. He wanted a piece that genuinely reflected her passion, one she could proudly wear and eventually pass down to their daughter.

A Gift with Meaning

Every element of this design tells a story. Travis chose the Woodcock and Bobwhite Quail, the two upland species native to their area that his wife actively manages and researches.

The two dogs featured in the piece are a thoughtful blend of all four pointers, representing the countless memories made behind them in the field. This pendant was designed to capture the heart of their shared adventures, honoring both the wildlife she protects and the loyal companions who make it all possible.

Our Custom Jewelry Design Process

The design journey, guided by master designer Tricia, was full of meaningful moments. One of the most special was seeing the first sketch come to life. Capturing the posture, movement, and expression of the dogs to make their characteristics instantly recognizable required patience, precision, and skill

Capturing the Woodcock proved to be a playful challenge. Early sketches looked beautiful but weren’t quite right. To most people, the difference might go unnoticed, but for a wildlife biologist, accuracy mattered. Through careful refinement and some humorous collaboration, we ensured the bird looked unmistakably like a Woodcock and avoided resembling exotic species like toucans or parrots.

Choosing a matte texture for the pendant was another deliberate decision. The matte finish softens the metal’s reflection, enhancing the depth and clarity of intricate details in the birds, dogs, and woven forest frame. Compared to a highly polished surface, the matte finish allows the storytelling elements to shine, highlighting each creature and the surrounding nature-inspired details.
