Embossing is a design technique that decorates a surface with a pattern that stands out in relief. Embossed jewelry raises the design on the metal above the metal’s flat surface. Coins provide a good example of a metal with an embossed pattern. Embossed jewelry has a long history dating back to the Bronze Age, but today, it can be done with machinery rather than by hand. Computer Aided Design (CAD) software can also be used to create embossed jewelry patterns.
