The earring back is the design element in a pair of earrings (or a single earring) that holds the earring in place. They come in a variety of styles, each one best suited for a particular type of earring. For example, butterfly backs work best with posts while positive locking backs are best for expensive jewelry since they do the best job of holding the earring securely in place. Other earring back types include rubber backs, ear wires, lever backs, and omega backs.
