A bail (also spelled ‘bale’) is a jewelry part used to attach a pendant or stone to a chain. It is usually placed in the center of a necklace where the pendant or stone can be attached and hung. Bails are made in a variety of sizes and styles as well as from a variety of materials, although the most common materials are metals such as sterling silver, gold, and brass. Some bails are made so that the pendant or stone can be attached after the necklace has been produced.
