A patina is a film that develops on the surface of metals such as copper and silver that causes discoloration. The patina develops over time as a result of exposure to the atmosphere. It is basically corrosion or oxidation of the metal’s surface and results in a sheen and different colors. Contemporary jewelry makers can duplicate and speed up this process to achieve the same coloring and sheen using special materials that create an ‘artificial’ patina.
