Red Carpet Jewelry: Classic, Conservative and Colorless

The influence of big money and big brands during the red carpet season in the US was evident this year as can be seen by the conservative style of jewelry worn during the two biggest award events: The Oscars and the Golden Globes. The big jewelry houses adorned the biggest stars and made the biggest splash even if that splash was rather pricey.

White diamonds, white gold and platinum were dominant along with classic designs—particularly at the Golden Globes. For example, Jessica Chastain sparkled in white gold and diamond earrings and cuffs by Piaget. Naomi Watts may have had the only bold statement of the evening wearing Bulgari’s iconic Serpenti diamond necklace. Julianne Moore matched her metallic gown with two platinum and diamond bracelets and three rings by Chopard. The De Beers Forevermark diamond brand, which personifies whiteness in its jewelry, adorned no fewer than three red carpet stars at the Golden Globes with layers of white diamond and metal jewelry (Kate Hudson, Giuliana Rancic and Frances O’Connor).

During the Oscars, there was a little more variety but largely white on white ruled. Anna Kendrick wore a diamond collar of five rows matched with marquis and pear-shaped diamond cluster earrings totaling 13 carats, reported by Norman Silverman. The necklace was tucked into the neckline of her gown. Jessica Chastain wore a delicate and refined diamond necklace by Piaget. The actress was recently named a brand ambassador for the luxury jewelry and watch brand.

Nicole Kidman wore more than $7 million worth of Harry Winston Diamonds. However, it was actually difficult to see the pieces. Felcity Jones wore the “Dans les Étoiles” earrings featuring white and yellow diamonds and briolette-cut champagne diamond drops set in 18K white gold and “Snowflake” bracelet with diamonds set in platinum.

There was some color at the Oscars but almost all of them were exceptional, unique standout pieces that would be difficult or even impossible to replicate. One of the most talked about Oscar jewels was actually a bib necklace worn by Scarlett Johansson, which was a costume necklace paired with the Piaget high jewellery Mediterranean garden ear cuff, . Of course Lupita Nyong’o white Calvin Klein gown adorned with approximately 6,000 white pearls (which turned out to be fake), was the talk of the evening. Few noticed her tasteful pearl drop earrings.

So if you want to replicate what was worn on the red carpet for 2015 think riviere for necklaces, tasteful and elegant drop, or diamond stud earrings, and thin bracelets.

Among the exceptions are big, bold pendant necklaces. In addition, colorful, elaborately designed rings that cover multiple fingers and ear cuffs have become mainstream and offer an effective way to present a bit of an edge while still maintaining a classic appearance.
