Floral Jewelry is Traditional and Modern

Flower inspired wedding ring sets

Nature has been an inspiration for jewelry makers for centuries, particularly the plants and flowers that surround us. And this is still true today.

Floral scenes and nature in general are often used to create romantic jewelry. The Art Nouveau Period (1890 to 1910) was particularly strong in the use of natural scenes, like flower and water lilies; and was a time when jewelry had a strong romantic nature.

Some say that floral jewelry has been reemerging among contemporary jewelers. I argue that there was never a time when this type of jewelry wasn’t prolific or acceptable (except for maybe the Art Décor period, which favored geometric patterns and machine-age themes).

Modern Italian jewelers Pasquale Bruni and Robert Coin are known for depicting natural themes in both a romantic way or with a bit of a modern edge (particularly Coin). Spanish jewelry company, Carrera y Carrera—known for their hand-made, high-karat jewelry—is equally known for its romantic take on their jewelry.

High jewelry companies, which often take their cues from the past, are prolific in depicting floral scenes. For example, Bulgari’s new high jewelry collection is inspired by Italian Renaissance gardens. Piaget’s hallmark symbol for jewelry and watches is the rose. And Fabergé was inspired by the landscapes and floral patterns of Southern France for its Summer in Provence collection. This latest collection of textured and layered jewelry features a contrast of blue, green and pink colors using various combinations of turquoise beads, pearls, polished enamel, baguette emeralds, diamonds and Paraiba tourmalines.

In keeping with nature-themed jewelry, we can also see that there is no shortage of flower jewelry examples on JewelryThis. In fact, jewelry with floral themes is among the most popular jewelry creations on the website. Many of the pieces advance traditional flower jewelry with modern design and innovative ideas. For example, Engagement Design created a CAD model inspired by a rose and set with a bright white sparking diamond.

One of the detailed designs is this engagement ring that depict a foliage vine climbing up the sides of the ring. A beautiful alternative to a flower while still keeping to a floral and natural nature theme.

It’s the designs like these that can turn traditional jewelry themes into something new and exciting.
