Colored Chains and Necklaces – All the Rage this Year

One of the biggest (and some might argue most fun) fashion trends of this year is big, prominent chain necklaces and bracelets. From classic and vintage to modern and edgy, they come in all different shapes, sizes, styles, colors and iterations. Colored and coated chains are especially trendy, perhaps because there are so many excellent coating processes available that help give the chains a more individualized, unique quality and beauty. The most popular processes are oxidation, colored PVD coating and acrylic coating.
Oxidation – Sterling silver jewelry is a favorite for the oxidation process and creates a more fresh and novel look as compared to traditional silver. During oxidation, the silver is exposed to oxygen in a pressurized environment for an extended period of time, which produces a darker, more tarnished and antique look for the jewelry. Depending on the jewelry piece and its style, oxidized silver can give off a timeless, chic, vintage, or classic vibe.
Colored PVD Coatings – PVD, which stands for “physical vapor deposition”, is a high-temperature vacuum coating process that deposits a thin, decorative finish on the jewelry piece (or whatever object the process is being applied to). PVD coatings are available in a variety of vivid colors, including metallic and brilliant, decorative finishes. In addition to the numerous color options, PVD also provides a level of protection against wear, corrosion, discoloration, and warping that standard gold plating can’t provide. Plus, depending upon the jewelry piece’s metal base, the PVD coating can result in different types of jewelry looks such as a ceramic look or a dulled finish.
Acrylic Coatings – Another jewelry coloring process is acrylic coating. Acrylic is one of the materials used for e-coating jewelry. This process makes it possible to create chains in an endless variety of vibrant colors and shades, and it gives chains a color boost that can be lively and vivid, or neutral and classic. With acrylic coating, there’s definitely no shortage of colors and shades to choose from to give jewelry a unique and personalized look.
