Step-cut gemstones are usually square or rectangular shaped with facets that run the length of the gemstone parallel to one another. The step cut takes its name from its facets, which look like steps because of their arrangement. In step cuts, the facets are typically larger than brilliant-cut diamonds. The emerald cut is the most well-known type of step cut, but there is also the Asscher cut and the baguette cut.
