A split shank is a cleaved band that splits into two (or even three) separate bands before joining the crown of the ring. There is a range of variations of the split shank, such as the multi-row split shank, the twisted split shank, and the plain split shank. Some rings are designed so that the shank is embellished with accent stones, often in a pave setting. Others are designed so the separate bands of the shank meet at a halo setting surrounding a center stone. The split shank is a very versatile design element popularly used for engagement rings.
