A riviere necklace consists of gemstones, in individual mountings, that continue all the way around, usually without any additional ornamentation. The gemstones are all of the same type and size or will graduate smoothly in size. The style was first made popular in the eighteenth century. The necklace takes its name from the French word ‘riviere’ which translates to ‘river’ in English. Hence, the necklace is like a river of gems.
