The post is the straight part of an earring that passes through the ear piercing. It comes with a removable backing that slides over the post and holds it in place in the back of the ear and keeps the earring from falling out of the ear. Posts consist of a thin metal rod with the decorative part of the earring at one end. Because they are less likely to cause an allergic reaction, the best metals for posts are nickel-free gold, platinum or sterling silver.
