The reverse of a cameo, an intaglio is carved into the surface of a gemstone (or shell) to create a recessed image, pattern, design, or engraving. The technique dates back to antiquity, but is still popular today. For a period of time, intaglios were also used to make impressions or seals for important documents. Today, we most often see intaglios in signet rings, which have seen a resurgence in popularity.
