The girdle of a gemstone is what creates its outline when viewing it from the top. It is the stone’s perimeter separating the gem’s pavilion from its crown. The girdle is also usually the part of the stone that is held when it is being examined and the portion of the stone that makes contact with the jewelry setting. While it is the widest part of the gem, when viewed from the side, the girdle looks fairly thin.
