Gemology is a branch of science devoted to the study of natural and artificial gemstones. Gemologists identify, grade and appraise gemstones via a variety of tools and instruments. Many jewelers and goldsmiths are also gemologists. Gemologist courses vary in length and what they teach, but most courses gemology programs offer certification from 3 months to 1 year from the start date. A formal college degree is not required for certification.
