Freshwater pearls are formed in oysters that have matured in water that is non saline such as lakes or ponds as opposed to saltwater from the sea. Whatever the type of pearl (natural, cultured, or freshwater), the pearl is formed when an irritant lodges inside the mantle tissue of a mollusk. When this happens, the mollusk tissue secretes a substance that eventually, after a few years, develops into a pearl.
