Jewelry etching is when a design or pattern is cut into a jewelry piece. Jewelry etching can be done either chemically or with electro-etching, which uses electricity instead of chemical to etch the metal. Etched designs are not the same as intaglio designs, which are scratched directly on the surface without the use of chemicals. Etching is also different from engraving, which has a deeper incision than etching.
