Emeralds are one of the four precious gemstones (the other three being the diamond, the ruby, and the sapphire). They are a variety of the mineral beryl and have a distinct and rich green coloring which it gets from trace amounts of chromium or vanadium. On a per-carat basis, high-quality emeralds can be worth more than diamonds and are actually rarer than diamonds. Emeralds are the traditional birthstone for May and have long been symbols of love, spirituality, protection, and wisdom.
