While once used to refer to a specific type of military ID tag, today the term ‘dog tag’ also refers to a type of personalized jewelry pendant. The classic rectangular shape with rounded corners based on the military version is still the most popular dog tag pendant shape, but other shapes are available too including heart shaped, round and oval-shaped tags. Dog tag pendants also come in a variety of metals such as sterling silver, platinum, gold, steel, and aluminum. The most popular chain used for dog tag pendants are ball chains, but they can also be worn on more ornate chains, especially if the dog tag is made from a precious metal.
