Carmeltazite was first discovered on Earth in 2019 in the Haifa District of Northern Israel. It is a rare aluminum-oxide mineral found in corundum. Carmeltazite takes its name from the location it was found (Mt. Carmel) and the major elements it contains: titanium, aluminum, and zirconium. Shortly after it was discovered, the International Mineralogical Association recognized it as a new, distinct mineral. Our blog post on Carmeltazite explains more about this rare and breathtaking mineral.
