A carat is a unit of weight for precious stones. A metric ‘carat’ is 200 milligrams so for example a diamond weighing 100 milligrams would be .5 carats and a diamond weighing 200 milligrams would be 1.0 carats . All precious stones are priced per carat. Each carat is divided into 100 points with each point equivalent to one one-hundredth of a carat. This subdivision allows gemologists to be more precise when weighing gemstones. Carat weight is one of the 4Cs of a diamond: cut, color, clarity, and carat.
