A cabochon, or cab for short, is a gemstone that has been shaped and polished rather than faceted. They are usually convex-shaped with a flat bottom and a domed or tipped top. Before gemstone cutting was established, a gemstone would usually be prepared ‘en cabochon’. Cabochon gemstones are often softer, opaque and translucent stones so the en cabochon method works well to highlight their special properties and details inside the stone. Faceting for these types of stones tends to mask these attributes.
