A birthstone is a gemstone that corresponds to a person’s birth month. The idea of birthstones goes back to biblical times, but modern birthstones were determined by a month’s astrological chart and matching characteristics of each stone. Traditionally, most months have only one birthstone, but some some months have two and even three birthstones. The American Gem Society endorses a list of birthstones that jewelers follow today.
