When a piece of jewelry is anodized, a layer of natural oxide is added to its metal surface. The new layer is thicker than the layer that existed before it was anodized. In the anodization process, the metal’s surface is heated by introducing electricity to the metal, which results in a permanent change to the surface of the metal, creating a decorative and durable finish. Some metals, such as ferrous metals, cannot be anodized.
