South Sea pearls are the rarest of all pearls for several reasons. They are cultured in a limited geographic area (primarily along the northwest coast of Australia and some in the Philippines and Indonesia); they are larger than most other pearls, and they take longer to grow. South Sea pearls are also the most expensive of all the pearls. They also have a higher than average nacre, which makes them more lustrous than other pearls.
