Jasper is an opaque variety of chalcedony. Jasper is rendered opaque because it contains a lot of impurities and foreign materials as opposed to agate which is also a form of chalcedony, but is translucent. The colors most often associated with jasper include brown, yellow, or reddish colors in addition to opaque colors of Chalcedony such as dark green, black or orange. Most jasper gemstones are multicolored and possess unique colored patterns.
