Chatoyancy is a term used in gemology to refer to an optical phenomenon where a gemstone is able to reflect a distinct, lustrous line of light that moves just below the surface of the stone when it is turned under a beam of incident light. While many types of gems exhibit chatoyancy, it’s not present in every specimen of those gems, which makes it rather rare. Chatoyancy is also called chatoyance or cat’s eye.
