Agate is a variety of chalcedony, which is a form of quartz in microcrystalline form. Agate can be either transparent or have vivid color patterns. When found in desirable qualities and colors, agate is considered a semi-precious stone. Opaque varieties of agate are sometimes referred to as jasper although they are not the same. The easiest way to tell the difference between the two semi-precious stones is to shine a light on the back of each stone. If it is translucent, you’re holding agate. If it’s not, you’re holding a jasper.
